Maybe you don’t even know what the term retriever dog really means. Therefore, in our article, we would like to tell you more about the different breeds of retriever dogs that are the most popular domestic dogs today.

How are the retriever dogs?

Retriever dogs, also called retriever dogs, were bred to bring prey to the hunter without damaging them. For this reason, the mouth of the retriever dog is soft, because it can pick up a bird and bring it to its reference human without biting it.

While retriever dogs are actually game animals, they are often kept as pets these days because of their friendly, obedient, and affectionate nature. It is said that they are “the best dogs in the world” and that they especially love children.

Because of their patience and friendliness, they are also used as therapy dogs for sick people or patients in rehabilitation.

Different breeds of retrievers

Retriever dogs belong to Group VIII of the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) and consist of the following breeds:

1. Labrador Retriever

Originally from Canada, the Labrador Retriever – which also shines on our picture – is one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. Her main character traits are kindness, energy, intelligence, kindness and gentleness.

They say they make wonderful company to people.

The Labrador is very curious. He loves to explore new things and landscapes and to follow traces. If it’s too boring for him, then he’ll escape too. The fur is always one color and can be either black, light or dark brown.

2. Golden Retriever

This breed originated from Scotland, where it evolved in 1850. They are excellent sniffer dogs and both their friendly character and golden fur have made them a very popular pet.

The Golden Retriever is a great house companion, but because it trusts very quickly, it is not a particularly suitable protection dog. He is tame, cuddly and is considered the fourth most intelligent dog in the world.

Unfortunately, because of his cravings, he tends to become overweight quickly.

3. Curly-coated retriever

This breed originally originated in England, but is better known abroad. As their name suggests, the animals have curly, dark brown or black fur. They are muscular and active, and both their tail and limbs are relatively long.

The curly-coated retriever is still used for bird hunting, both in the water and on land. Above all, however, it is kept as a pet on farms and in country houses.

It is a cheerful breed that likes to have fun and is very intelligent. Unfortunately, however, they are a little difficult to train.

4. Flat-coated retrievers

This breed also originated in the United Kingdom and is also suitable for hunting in the water and on land. It is a medium-sized dog that weighs around 30 kg and has thick, smooth, light, dark brown, or black fur.

The flat-coated retriever is a very active animal. He is suitable as a playmate for children, is trusting, gentle, affectionate and obedient if he has been properly socialized and brought up from an early age.

He learns very quickly, loves to play and keeps his positive attitude from puppy to old age.

5. Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever

This is a medium-sized dog that was bred to retrieve birds. It is often confused with the Golden Retriever, even though it is actually smaller.

It is believed that this breed originated in the 19th century by crossing a setter with a spaniel. The breed was later refined by the Collie and Retriever.

Novia Scotia Retriever

The Novie, as it is popularly known, is athletic and muscular. Its two-layer fur is water-repellent. He has an intelligent, lovable character and is particularly kind to children with whom he likes to play.

6. Chesapeake Retriever

These retriever dogs were bred in the United States to retrieve ducks and other waterfowl. The Chesapeake Retriever is a medium to large-sized dog with a wavy coat of various shades of brown. Its physique is similar to that of the Labrador.
