The Field Spaniel: a very special dog

History and origins

This breed is similar to and has the same origins as the English Cocker Spaniel . However, in 1892 they separated to produce two different races.

This breed quickly became popular due to its beautiful appearance and pleasant character. But actually the breeders wanted to create a monochrome dog without spots. This eventually led to the extinction of the original spaniel.

Crossing different breeds made the legs shorter and the body stockier, but this caused genetic problems, even if the breed was very successful at dog shows.

In order to regain the original  Field Spaniel breeders began to cross it with the English Springer Spaniel, thereby reducing genetic problems and preserving the breed.

But to this day it is a relatively unknown breed.

Physical characteristics of the field spaniel

Its appearance is very similar to that of the English Cocker Spaniel:  medium-sized, hairy, with long, floppy ears and a noble look. The males are usually around 18 inches tall while the females are only 17 inches. The weight of both is between 23 and 50 kilograms.

The shape of the head is rounded, with a long, narrow snout and dark brown, almond-shaped eyes. His body is imposing, muscular and strong with a deep chest.

Many dock their tails, some dogs are even born without a tail.

Its legs harmonize with its size. They have a lot of fur that is soft and silky. The paws are round and compact, which gives him safe support when walking and enables him to take big steps.

It also has a lot of fur on the rest of the body, but especially on the chest, ears, legs and stomach.

The approved colors are brown, black and reddish; and in some cases, fire colored markings are allowed, but should not contrast with the main color.

Character and temperament of the field spaniel

Although originally used as hunting dogs, the field spaniel makes great pets, as do other spaniel breeds.

He  needs a lot of activity, but is very calm and easy to train, tolerant of children and incredibly loyal.

These dogs are very affectionate (in a family they consider only one person to be the primary owner), but sometimes that attachment can become possessive.

Care and health

Their fur is a lot of work because it is long and needs to be brushed daily  to prevent knots from forming.

You need to clean his eyes every day to prevent infection.

The shape of their ears makes them the ideal place for parasites and bacteria that can hide and cause disease. For this reason, it is necessary to check them every day and to clean them with a clean cotton ball or cloth.

In summary, the field spaniel is a very loving and loyal animal that will make your days more beautiful. Will he be your next pet?
