Politicians’ pets: an ace up their sleeve
We all know that there are numerous benefits to living with a pet on a daily basis. One of them is the affection we get from Fellnase and Co. and which we should undoubtedly reciprocate. If you transfer this donation to the public world of politics, then it can turn into a powerful weapon of sympathy.
If a politician is photographed together with his pet, it creates a feeling of closeness and humanity. This, of course, is something that government groups and politicians’ press officers are only too happy to take advantage of.
But apart from their influence on the media, the politicians’ pets also reflect that love for our four-legged friends knows no boundaries or regulations.
Dogs and cats in world politics
Spain
When you talk about the politicians’ pets, you quickly notice that most of them prefer dogs or cats. The President of Spain has shared his residence and family with a water dog named Turca since 2017. The animal also appeared with him in public on several occasions.
Before that, Rico lived in Moncloa, the residence of the president. This energetic fur nose accompanied the ex-president Mariano Rajoy on his walks. Rico is a true pedigree dog, an English pointer with black and white fur.
During the reign of José Maria Aznar, Cico and Gufa lived in the residence. They were cocker spaniels who loved to storm the gardens of Moncloa. Allegedly, this was the then president’s favorite breed, and he took them for a walk every day.
France
And what about other nations? In France, President Macron has often been seen accompanied by Nemo.
The French President adopted the mix of black Labrador and Schnauzer in 2017. Nemo feels very much at home in his environment and has even accompanied his reference people on some public events. He is just the latest in a long tradition of Labradors with French presidents.
Russia
Russian President Vladimir Putin is a special animal lover. More than once he has shown that animals and nature are important to him. But he also has two pets privately, with whom he has already been photographed several times. It’s Yume and Buffy. Yuma is an Akita Inu originally from Japan and Buffy is a Bulgarian shepherd dog.
England
Have you heard of Larry the tabby cat? While he’s not actually a pet in and of itself, he has lived in one of the most iconic state residences in the world for several years. Since 2011 he has made himself comfortable at 10 Downing Street, the residence of the British Prime Minister.
This likable velvet paw made it to the Downing Street residence with then Prime Minister David Cameron and now has the title of Chief Mouser . Larry is so popular that he even has his own account on Twitter.
USA, the cradle of the politicians’ iconic pets
If there is any country with a long tradition of politicians and pets, it is the United States of America. Almost all presidents who lived in the White House had illustrious pets. Theodor Roosevelt is even said to have had up to 26 different pets.
One of the most iconic pets is the Scottish terrier Fala (which also graces our cover picture) who accompanied President Franklin D. Roosevelt. His picture became so important that today it is the only pet that has been immortalized with his own statue together with his reference person.
But the tradition went on and in recent history you can name Bo and Sunny, the famous water dogs of the Obama family, or Barney and Miss Beazley, the two Scottish terriers of former President George W. Bush.
