How a dog expresses pain

Dogs usually only show their pain when they are feeling pretty bad. You have different ways of expressing pain, some obvious, others very subtle.

Animals often do not show that they are injured or sick, because weakness should not be shown in nature. However, we will then explain various signs that can indicate that a dog is in pain.

How does a dog express its pain?

The following behaviors can indicate that a dog is in pain:

Dog in pain

  • The dog is louder than usual,  it moans, howls, barks …
  • He is constantly licking part of his body. If there is no visible wound, it could be an indication of internal pain.
  • Changes in habits can also be a sign of pain:  he sleeps more, has no appetite, drinks more water …
  • The dog is out of breath,  he is panting, even if he hasn’t run.
  • He will adopt unusual postures to defecate or urinate.
  • He has difficulty sitting or lying down, or cannot find a position in which he is comfortable.
  • He moves differently,  wobbles, is stiff, or has difficulty standing on his feet.
  • His pupils are dilated.  In eye pain, however, the pupils are usually smaller and the eyes are half closed.

Dogs have different ways of expressing themselves. It is therefore important to recognize certain signs in order to be able to care for and treat the animal appropriately.

More signs of pain

Changes in behavior can also be a sign of pain:

  • The dog is hiding, running away, or he doesn’t want to leave your side at all.
  • He is aggressive and can even try to bite anyone who approaches.
  • He avoids being petted.
  • The dog looks dejected.
  • He is discouraged and does not want to go for a walk.
  • He does not greet family members with enthusiasm or does not react when called.

How can you tell if the dog is in pain?

To find out whether changes in behavior are due to pain, you can use light pressure to feel certain parts of the body and observe the dog’s reaction.

You need to be careful when doing this, as the dog may act aggressively if it is in pain.

See a veterinarian who can  examine the dog and initiate treatment if necessary.
