Ca de Bou or Majorca mastiff

The  Ca de Bou, also known as the Majorca mastiff, is a Molossian dog of Spanish origin, more precisely from the Balearic Islands. He excels as a good protector and is calm, brave and loyal.

Origin of the Ca de Bou

The ca de bou is closely related to bull biting and other animal fights. This breed is often associated with the Alanos and Dogos Españoles . This was introduced by the Aragonese monarch James I, the Conqueror, during the conquest of Mallorca between 1229 and 1231.

Since then, Alano and Dogo Español have been crossed with other native breeds of the islands, as well as other fighting dogs brought by the English after the signing of the Treaty of Utrecht. In this way and through the crossing of these powerful races, the Ca de Bou we know today was created.

External features of the Ca de Bou

The Ca de Bou is a sturdy dog, with a strong and well-shaped body. According to the official norm published in 1996, the back height for males should be 55 to 58 centimeters and for bitches 52 to 55 centimeters. The weight is usually around 35 to 38 kg for the male and 30 to 34 kg for the bitch.

Its head is strong and massive, with strong jaws and generally without noticeable wrinkles. The muzzle is usually 1/3 in length of the rest of the skull. It begins in the inner corner of the eye, wide and conical, with a straight and slightly ascending line up to the black nose.

The color of the fur can be lion-colored or black and brindle. In competitions, white spots covering more than 30% of the fur are penalized, with the exception of the front legs, chest and muzzle.

Character and behavior

As with any breed, but even more so with large Molossians, correct and loving acclimatization is essential. He is a calm, good-natured and playful dog, courageous and protector of his family, especially with the youngest, with whom he shows great patience and tolerance.

Care and other points to keep in mind

Although there is no unanimity in the various regional legislations, in some areas it is considered a potentially dangerous dog. This means that the owner must have insurance. He also has to follow a number of recommendations, such as the type of leash or the obligation to leash.

Although no serious medical incidents have been reported for this breed, it is a large Molossian. Regular veterinary examinations are therefore recommended to avoid cardiovascular disease, stomach torsion or joint problems.

In short, when you have a Ca de Bou or have decided to purchase one, prepare yourself for a good-natured, calm, courageous, and extraordinarily loyal companion to your family. Another family member that everyone will enjoy.
