Why combining different types of food is not a good idea
A variety of food is healthy and important, but combining different types of food can have very negative consequences.
It is not a problem if you give your dog dry food today and freshly cooked chicken with carrots tomorrow. What you should definitely avoid, however, is a mix of different types of food.
Dry or wet food
These foods are produced through an extrusion process, where the raw material mixture is pressed into different shapes under high pressure. In this way, carbohydrates are unlocked and easier to digest.
However, this food is digested slowly (8 to 10 hours), so dogs do not need to eat more than twice a day. The animals are saturated with dry and wet food for a longer period of time.
Natural feed
Food that is freshly prepared is digested quickly and does not fill you up for as long.
Food mix – why is it dangerous?
If different types of food are mixed that require a different digestive process, discomfort can arise. The natural food is not digested normally, gas is formed and can result in a stomach twist.
A twisting of the stomach can be fatal. It is an emergency that requires immediate veterinary attention.
How do you recognize a torsion in the stomach?
The following signs can indicate this:
- The dog yelps briefly at the turn itself, which is briefly painful.
- After that, the dog only walks cautiously, usually with a hunched back and tummy tucked in.
- The dog tries to vomit, but because the esophagus is constricted, this is not possible. Sometimes white foam comes out of the mouth.
- The dog is panting and moaning, he is suffering more and more from pain.
If you have one or more of the signs mentioned, you should take the dog to the vet immediately.
Varied diet for dogs
If your dog is bored of the dry food, you can alternate with fresh food, for example chicken in the morning, dry food in the evening.
You can also give the dog 10% natural food and 90% dry food in combination. So the four-legged friend has more variety, but there is no danger.
A mix that consists of equal parts of different types of food becomes a danger – you know that now and can simply prevent it. You should be particularly careful with larger dog breeds!
