Small Dogs With A Big Character

While it’s a generalization, we ultimately concluded that small dogs are often the biggest characters.
Small dogs with great characters

It is said that appearances are deceptive, and in the case of our friends the dogs, it is absolutely true, especially when it comes to their size. There are huge dogs, such as the Danish mastiff, who, in addition to their noble character, are also friendly and calm. Small dogs, however, often have fat personalities.

Then again there is the Schnauzer, a medium-sized dog that, although it looks cute and fluffy, has a rough and independent character.

While it’s a generalization, we ultimately concluded that small dogs are often the biggest characters.

Small dogs that have a lot of character

Small dogs, big hearts: poodles

Here we introduce you to various small dogs that have the greatest characters you can imagine:

Australian Silky Terrier

This dog comes from the terrier family and is known for barking out creatures he does not know and for behaving distantly. Even if he is not particularly kind to strangers, he looks after his family with great affection.

Bichon Frize

This dog is easy to recognize: he is a real cuddle. The history of the breed saw many extreme moments. At first they were dogs of the nobility, then they were almost forgotten. Maybe that’s why they have a suspicious character. The Bichon Frisé family comes first,  in that it is no different from the Australian Silky Terrier. At home, you can count on your Bichon Frize 100 percent, but don’t expect the same with strangers.

poodle

When you read the name of this breed, you must have thought of the beautiful, white, curly fur it is known for. However, there are poodles in other colors. Poodles are small dogs with one of the worst traits … of  course only when they are strangers.

This is due to their excessive  protective instinct. They want to defend their family, even if they are not in danger .  So it happens that the poodle doesn’t like it at all when he smells a stranger near his own. That’s why he reacts aggressively.

Chihuahua

With their protruding eyes and dwarfish shape, Chihuahuas are very peculiar little dogs.  Nevertheless, they should be socialized from early puppy years, otherwise they will react negatively to strangers. At home they feel like kings: even if they love you unconditionally, do not enter their turf without their permission.

dachshund

Dachshunds are small dogs that appeared in Germany a few centuries ago. They are also called Zamperl or Teckel, and they are curious and intelligent. Perhaps this has to do with their work in tracking down other animals’ burrows.

They have a strong will, which is why they need a pack leader who shows them their limits  and makes it clear to them where their place is. If the dog is not trained properly, it can become aggressive towards strangers or even towards its own family.

Jack Russell Terrier

Jack Russell Terrier: small dogs with a great hunting instinct

Famous little dogs with big characters that come from England are the Jack Russell Terriers. It is said that if you offer them your little finger, they’ll grab your whole arm immediately, and that is a sign of their intelligence.

They have a strong hunting instinct, much stronger than that of other dogs. That is why extensive dog training is essential, otherwise it can lead to bite problems with other animals or strangers. Jack Russell Terriers that have not been trained can kill other small animals, such as birds.

We therefore only recommend this dog to people who have the time to train them  and who are familiar with dog training and education, or who have the financial means to hire a professional to train the dog.

Papillon

These are small dogs that are very active and playful, but also very suspicious at the same time. Even if they love to play, they don’t do that with everyone. That is why they eye strangers from a distance to first determine whether they are sympathetic or not.

This list is a rough generalization, of course we know that not every dog of the breeds described here has this character. Often it is only dependent on good socialization that the animals react in a friendly manner to other people or animals.
